Chesney Hawkes has just fired back into the spotlight. ‘Get A Hold of Yourself’ – his first single in more than ten years – received its premiere play courtesy of Scott Mills at Radio 2, and Chesney has been back on our TV screens on ‘The One Show’ tonight.
You’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the following months, continuing with today’s release of the ‘Get A Hold of Yourself’ video where you’ll be seeing… well, pretty much all of him. Watch it BELOW.
Capturing some ‘Saltburn’ vibes, alongside references to ‘Risky Business’, ‘Love Actually’, ‘The Full Monty’ and ‘The Simpsons Movie’, the visual sees Chesney relishing a chance to perform the track, often with nothing more than a hat or a strategically positioned banister maintaining his modesty. As he dances like no-one’s watching, his lust-for-life is infectious – and it’s clear that the national treasure – Chesney Hawkes comeback is on.
And if you think the stately home he’s in looks familiar, you’d be right. It’s Arley Hall in Cheshire, best known as Thomas Shelby’s home in much of ‘Peaky Blinders’. It has also featured prominently in the Netflix smash ‘Fool Me Once’ and the Sky comedy ‘Brassic’.
Chesney says, “Ever since I watched Saltburn, I wanted to do something as bold as that scene -and that was where the idea started! There wasn’t another option that matched the essence of the song, the freedom that it encapsulates and the message I want to get across with Get A Hold Of Yourself. As ideas flowed, we introduced a few more movie references. And if anyone was wondering where I’ve been all this time, maybe this answers those questions….I’m 52 and dancing about naked in Tommy Shelby’s house!”
Despite the playful ‘Get A Hold of Yourself’ video, the song has a deeper message: it’s a visual statement affirming that Chesney is returning with the new-found confidence to do what he wants without caring what anyone else thinks.
Chesney adds, “It’s taken a long time to feel confident enough to really throw myself back into a project but growing up and feeling much more comfortable and freer within myself has allowed that to happen. That’s what “Get A Hold Of Yourself” is about, getting hold of yourself and being free and not giving a f*ck what people think!”

The Chesney Hawkes story is one that’s so unbelievable they should make a film about it. Which is kind of where it all started. Between his mega international hit ‘The One and Only’ and a starring role alongside Roger Daltrey in the film ‘Buddy’s Song’, Chesney became a global pop star when he was just 19-years-old. That first run of success burned intensely but briefly, but he settled into family life, continued to make music, always raised the roof whenever he performed his signature song, and made occasional star forays into reality shows.
But gradually, Chesney’s profile has been reignited in recent years – not only due to his music, but also his lifelong love of football. He inadvertently became England’s good luck charm at the 2022 World Cup, before bringing more good fortune by performing to fans of his beloved West Ham as they won the Europa Conference League the following year.
All the while, Chesney had been working on new music alongside the BRIT Award winner and Grammy nominee Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, One Direction). ‘Get A Hold of Yourself’ is the first product of those sessions and finds the sweet spot between classic Chesney charm and a modern pop sound for 2024. Expect much more to come from a man who is not the same as all the rest.
